New York State defines physical therapy as:
… the evaluation, treatment, or prevention of disability, injury, disease or other condition of health using physical, chemical, and mechanical means including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, air, water, sound, electricity, massage, mobilization, and therapeutic exercise with or without assistive devices, and the performance and interpretation of tests and measurements to assess pathophysiological, pathomechanical, and developmental deficits of human systems to determine treatment, and assist in diagnosis and prognosis using a variety of modalities. |
While your physician or surgeon may refer you to a particular physical therapy practice, New York State gives you the freedom to choose the physical therapist that you believe will provide the best treatment during your rehabilitation. (For more information, visit Choosing a Physical Therapist at the American Physical Therapy Association.) www.apta.org.
By law, you are allowed to see a physical therapist for up to 10 visits within 30 days without a prescription, but always check with your insurance company first to determine your plan’s guidelines regarding benefits.

What to Expect on Your First Visit
The first time you come to Wading River Physical Therapy, please wear loose, comfortable clothing.
A licensed physical therapist will take you through a thorough evaluation that will include:
- Your medical history
- Clinical assessment to determine:
- Point of pain
- Physical dysfunction, e.g., gait disturbance, balance problems, myofascial pain
- Neurological dysfunction, e.g., from a stroke, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, ALS (Lou Gherig’s disease), etc.
- Development of an individualized treatment plan, based on your physician’s diagnosis and our evaluation
Once we have created your personalized care plan, your path to optimal recovery begins. Your treatment plan takes into account your needs and goals, medical history, age, and physical abilities.
We will work with you and your doctor to determine your progress, and we regularly update your physician throughout your treatment.
If you are in pain at the time of your first visit, your evaluation may include treatment to give you pain relief. Your therapist will provide you with instructions to help you control your pain symptoms. |
When indicated, supervised exercise using our exercise equipment will be an important part of your program; physical activity plays a key role in your recovery and progress. You will receive instructions for exercises to be done at our office or at home.
